Preliminary task and evaluation.

Our preliminary task was very simple, with no real plot to it. It shows a teacher handing in some paperwork to a head teacher. We decided to focus on a very simplistic plot so that we could instead spend more time demonstrating the various filming techniques that we had to demonstrate.

We used the following techniques in our preliminary task:

  • Match on action: This was shown when the female teacher entered the classroom, match on action is when the audience sees the actor start an action from one camera angle and finish it in another, for example, like demonstrated in the clip, when the female teacher entered through the door. The audience first see her outside the classroom about to enter, but the shot finishes from within the classroom.
  • Eyeline match: We used eyeline match to express a feeling of confusion from the female teacher when she was about to leave the room. We did this by filming one of the teachers looking one way and then filmed the other teacher looking back in a different shot. Post editing it looked like the two teachers were looking in the same direction when the raw footage would show that they were not.
  • Shot reverse shot: This was used to film the conversation. This is done by filming over the shoulder of the person that isn't talking. So when the female teacher is talking, the camera man would be behind the male teacher and vice versa.
  • 180 degree rule: We did not break the 180 degree rule at any point.

Thriller Evaluation - Q1.

This was created using Popplet. It is my answer to evaluation question one which looks at typical thrillers and how our film adhered to the standard practises of the genre and how it challenged them.

Thriller Evaluation - Q3

We would have to be careful about which company we would choose to distribute our product as not all production companies are suitable. For example, Disney would not be a suitable company to produce a film like this because as a company they mostly work with animated films which are suitable for audiences of all ages.

Suitable choices for the distribution of our film in the United States are as follows:

  • Paramount
  • 20th Century Fox
  • Columbia
  • MGM
The companies that could bring the film to the United Kingdom are the following:

  • FilmFour
  • Working Title
  • Metrodome Distribution
The first way to watch our film would have to be the cinema. This would encourage people to go out and spend money at the cinema which generates a bigger revenue for the film and cinema market as a whole. People will be encouraged to go out and see the film this way as it is the only way to see it at the time of its release and shortly after. Once the film has been out for a while, it would become available through streaming services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer as well as the traditional DVD and BluRay disc way of enjoying films at home.

This sequence of events ensures that more money goes into the industry than if all the methods of distribution were enabled at once, on the release of the film. This is why we chose these methods. Increasing monetary gain is important whenever possible for a company that is making their first film.

The advantage to these methods of distribution is also that the name of our company can be seen by the public eye more often. It will be visible in stores, on the internet, in the cinemas and in the outside world generally. People are bound to come into contact with the company at some point during their daily lives and it is bound to raise some interest from some people who see the logo.

Thriller Evaluation - Q4

The audience of our Thriller would be primarily teenage males. This is indicated by the results that we obtained from the survey we created. It indicates that 25 of the 38 people that completed the survey are male, leaving 13 females that completed the film related survey. This means that 65.79% of the potential audience are male.

34 of the people that completed the survey claimed that they are between the ages of 16 - 24. There is an anomaly in the results for age however, one person claims that they are in the range of 65 - 74, we believe this to be a margin of error, making it safe to assume that 100% of our audience is 16 - 24 meaning we are only providing for teenagers and young adults.

Our Vox Populi video indicates that there is a big interest in thrillers as a genre, this is why we believe that a fair amount of people would watch our thriller.
